How To Avoid Problems

Problems? The most important component to a stress-free move is a complete and accurate estimate. Your estimator should record exactly what you intend to move on the Table of Measurements. Without a copy of the Table of Measurements, your estimate might not be valid. If the moving company provides only an "outline" instead of a detailed quote, you may open the possibility of additional and substantial charges after the move. Make sure your quote/estimate is complete and accurate...if you have any doubts, you may want to get another estimate or possibly two additional estimates.

Another way to prevent problems is to plan your entire move very carefully. You can consult the Pre-Plan section of this site to determine the timing and requirements you'll face in the weeks and days leading up to your move. You may even want to print out these guidelines and place them where they can be referenced frequently.

If you'll need storage services, be sure to finalize your decisions concerning these services prior to your move. Some questions to ask about storage services: Is the facility climate-controlled? Is the facility secure? How are valuables handled? Who, exactly, will be packing and crating my belongings? How and when do I pay for storage services? How can I compare pricing?

The final key to a stress-free move is communication. Make sure you understand all aspects and details of your move and mover. Your moving company should be happy to answer any questions, and if they're not, then you may want to consider another option. Your move can actually be quite easy and enjoyable–just make sure you ask the right questions!
